The Palomar Observatory is located in north county San Diego. Since the 1930′s it has been a world-class astronomical research center that is owned and operated by the California Institute of Technology. There are five telescopes used nightly for a wide variety of research programs conducted by Caltech’s faculty, post-doctoral fellows and student and researchers at Caltech’s collaborating institutions.
The Observatory is open to the public during the day hours from 9:00am to 4:00pm daily except for December 24th and 25th. Night-time visits cannot be accomodated without interfering with the scientific studies.
The interior of the dome is kept at nighttime temperatures, so it is recommended to dress accordingly.
